In-hospital Impact presentations for the 2017-2018 school year have begun. So far we have had students from MTS, Laurier, and CCH join us. The in-hospital presentation provides students with an opportunity to see firsthand the journey of a trauma patient.
The morning portion of the day is spent at Victoria Hospital where students spend time in the Emergency Department, with Paramedics in an ambulance, and in the Critical Care Trauma Centre (CCTC). In the afternoon students go across the street to Parkwood Institute where they learn about rehabilitation after serious injury and meet survivors of trauma, who share their personal stories. The Impact hospital tour offers students a unique opportunity to speak to many healthcare professionals working in variety of disciplines to learn about their roles and experiences.
Students often share their appreciation for how hands-on the presentation is. During the tour, students may have the opportunity to use ultrasound and work with Respiratory Therapy to trial intubation on a mannequin.
After attending Impact we hope students come away with a greater understanding of injury and better understanding of the potential consequences associated with their choices.
